Trees | A group exhibition | Bell House | 3, 4, 5 and 6 July 2025 | London, SE21

“Trees” is a special art exhibition at Bell House, held in celebration of Kew Gardens’ vibrant new show, The Power of Trees, currently on display at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery.  In response, the Bell House Exhibitions team has curated a selection of contemporary artworks inspired by trees, including striking photography, prints, and paintings—each piece reflecting the enduring connection between nature and creativity.

Mari’s ceramic vessels begin as solid blocks of clay, hand-carved using kurinuki – a traditional Japanese technique that favours patience, presence, and intuition. Each piece is shaped by subtraction, allowing the vessel to slowly emerge. Finished with ash glazes and fired in a wood-burning kiln, Mari’s ceramic vessels embody an elemental alchemy – where earth, ash, and fire converge.

The glazes for this selection are made from wood ash collected from trees, and each piece is fired in a wood-burning kiln. This series of vessels has been chosen to accompany a woodland palette, with incense boxes, teacups and sake cups glazed in a palette of green, from silvery lichen to deep moss, evoking nature’s quieter tones and mirroring the living landscape.

Displayed alongside paintings in diverse media and photographic works, the ceramics offer a tactile anchor: earthy and elemental. Together, these works invite the viewer into a multi-sensory reflection on trees – not only as subjects, but as collaborators in material, process, and inspiration. Mari’s practice honours the imperfection and individuality at the heart of both kurinuki and wood firing, where every vessel becomes a quiet tribute to time, growth, and change.
